Noel Tata is clinching his first overseas acquisition for the $72-billion conglomerate , Tata Group. Tata International Ltd , spearheaded by him, is set to acquire 51% stake in Portugal’s Move-On Shoes , giving it a toehold in the European footwear retailing market.

The transaction follows Tata International’s ambition to emerge as a branded retailer in the footwear market. The company, which has huge manufacturing capabilities and is a supplier to brands such as Escada and Hush Puppies , has been exploring overseas brand buyouts.

Recently, it forayed into domestic footwear retailing under Tashi brand. Noel, who has been associated with the group’s fashion and retail firms Titan Industries and Trent , is expected to transform Tata International along similar lines.

It must also be noted that early this year Tata International ought 76% stake in Chennaibased Bachi Shoes in a deal to augment its manufacturing capabilities.

The owner of Big Bazaar hypermarkets and Central destination malls will open the first all-new format of gourmet food store , Foodhall, in Mumbai’s most luxurious shopping mall Palladium this week.

Foodhall is the fourth organized food retailing chain in Future Group’s portfolio. The three existing ones include mass retail store Food Bazaar , no-frills small-format KB’s Fair Price stores and franchisee store FoodRite, which it acquired from South African grocery chain Shoprite.

It’s a bold move in an inflationary food market where sentiments are down and consumers are looking at value deals at discount stores. But experts said gourmet and luxury foods have nothing to do with food inflation because such retailers are targeting consumers unaffected by rising food prices.

Rising incomes, more people travelling overseas and increasing health and nutrition awareness have made gourmet food a huge opportunity in the country. The opportunity for gourmet food is estimated at about 4,000-5,000 crore, which is about 5% of the overall foods industry. The competition include Godrej Nature’s Basket, which operates over 10 stores, and smaller chains such as Le Marche and Modern Bazaar . Besides, RPG’s Spencer’s Retail has a section on gourmet foods at some of its stores.

let’s see what is new IT rule which has squirmed NASSCOM…

The new section 43A of the Indian IT Act, notified last month, state that a corporate shall have to obtain permission through letter or fax or email from each client before collection of sensitive information. Thus, BPOs will have to inform the client regarding purpose of usage before collection of such information, if they go by the new IT rules 2011.

Sensitive personal information here refers to financial details related to bank account, credit card or other payment instruments. A large number of BPOs in India have clients such as American Express , Citibank , HSBC, Bank of America and collect financial information before undertaking any transactions.

Sensitive information also refers to physical, physiological and mental health condition, medical records and history. All medical transcription firms operating out of India have to have access to medical records of patients in US.

What is Body Shopping

The practice of IT companies sending software engineers on short assignments, typically 3-6 months, to companies based in Europe, US and other nations. The foreign company pays the Indian firm for services of each professional while the domestic company pays a daily allowance over and above the salary paid to them.

Why is it under Tax Scanner

Software firms currently pay no tax on such income, claiming deduction under Section 10A of the Income Tax Act that deals with benefits for software export income. I-T Dept has argued such contracts involve export of manpower, and not export of software, as the professionals are under control and supervision of the company abroad, which also owns the services they render or products they develop.
